These Nonsense Word Practice Sheets can be used in a variety of ways!
I love to have these sitting at my reading table and use them as a warm up before my reading group. Using a highlighter my students highlight the vowel and say the sound. They then say the word. This really helps my students to focus their attention on the vowel which seems to be the most difficult part for my students. After my students become more fluent, I have them just read the words. My students will whisper read the word and then on my cue we will say the word in unison that way I am hearing all of my students read.
Another idea is using these in a center and having your students use a timer while they read the words and they see how many words they can read in 1 minute.
Lastly, you can send these home for homework and have your students read these to their parents. I have included a second version of these sheets that include directions for parents if you choose to send them home as homework.
