Students will practice letter sounds and blending CVC Nonsense words in a unique, fun way!
I have used these strips with my RTI groups as extra practice for letter sounds and blending CVC words. Students like to race each other to see who can read the most strips, or we’ll work together to see how many strips the group can get together before the timer goes off!
For each vowel there are two pages with six strips. The first word on each strip is a two-letter word that students read. Following the word is a series of nonsense words containing the same rime with different onsets. This activity helps students develop automaticity while reading CVC words because they do not need to segment sounds for each word, once they have read the initial word/rime. You may use this game in a variety of fun ways (partners, small group, independent, etc.). It’s a great way to immediately begin practicing reading whole words, once students learn letter sounds!
This year, I have really focused on my younger students and developing fun, engaging ways to help them read whole words. This is one of many games that has helped and kept students motivated and excited during reading.
Keep on a lookout for, more, CVC word reading games to come!
