This set includes 17 nontraditional math word problems. Each problem comes with three pages and is designed for students in grades 3-6. Students do not need to have an understanding of algebraic equations in order to solve.
Page one states the problem and the strategy for independent practice. Page two includes the beginning of the solution for a guided practice opportunity. Page three includes the problem and the solution.
These problems are great to use as Problem of the Week challenges for your math students or for enrichment centers. The problems can also be printed as task cards, used for assessments, or as homework. Use the guided practice to reduce frustration and to increase problem solving stamina.
Challenge your students to apply the critical thinking skills and problem solving strategies to nontraditional word problems.
If you're looking for ways to differentiate instruction within your math class, consider using the guided practice to scaffold and build confidence. (Hint: this will also reduce the "I don't get it" complaints from your students... and parents!)
Post one problem per week, give as homework, or use for enrichment among your early finishers.
