The "Made Up North American Football League" gives students the opportunity to choose a city in the United States or Canada and create a football franchise based there. The project works best in association with a unit on North America, or two units on U.S. geography and Canada geography so they have general background knowledge on regions and cities to draw from. (I have also made a version for a Canada/U.S./Mexico version)
*The project file linked is a PDF, but if you would like more editing ability (such as eliminating examples of my own hometown Beloit, WI or any of the references to myself) I can give you the link to an editable Google Doc via email.
Throughout the process of creating the franchise, students will be using geographic skills to analyze local history, culture, physical geography and demographics to create a name/logo/color scheme and uniforms, design and locate a stadium, competitively price tickets, concessions and apparel, create a specialty food for their stadium, and separate the franchises of their class into divisions, among other standards-based geography skills
