As a librarian I read quite a few books to students. Recently my staff has been involved with a professional development study on The Fundamental 5 by Sean Cain. To "rigor up" my read alouds, I have started creating Framed read alouds. I focus on a specific skill, create a hand out for students to use along with my read aloud and use the final question as an exit ticket. These are NOT worksheets. They are meant as an instructional printout to allow students to process their thoughts, the instructor to see their thoughts and implement critical writing throughout the lesson. These three handouts include a lesson for Native American Legends (I used Rabbit and the Moon by Douglas Wood), Folktales comparing a traditional Stone Soup to Fandango Stew by David Davis and historical fiction (I used The Outlaw Thanksgiving by Emily Arnold McCully).
