Supporting Inuit, First Nations and Native American Literature in the classroom
Not My Girl, written by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margret Pokiak-Fenton and illustrated by Gabrielle Grimard, depicts the struggles an Inuit girl experiences while reuniting with her family after attending a northern residential school. This is a younger child's version of the novel, A Stranger at Home.
This novel study unit was created to support a single novel read-aloud, should a class set be unavailable.
Comprehension reading strategies used in this unit are: connection, visualization, question, and infer.
Student and teacher assessment rubrics are customized for each lesson.
To obtain a copy of this book and others like it, I recommend checking out Strong Nations,
an online bookstore supplying indigenous and Native American books. Not only do they have an extensive selection, they provide themed book bundles for all age ranges.
