Understanding culture is vital for young readers to envision the characters and their conflicts. By viewing and discussing the film Not Without My Daughter, starring Sally Field, students develop a greater vision of the Middle East while studying either, or both, of Hosseini's novels. For this unit, my students chose to read A Thousand Splendid Suns or The Kite Runner for their literature circles. I ended the unit with this film the first year and then used it at the beginning of the unit the next year; do what works best for your students, but I found it to be more effective as a teaching tool at the start of the unit because students constantly drew on Field's experiences in the film when analyzing aspects of the novels.
Even if your students are not reading these novels, the film is a great way to discuss women's rights and laws in the Middle East.
