This Notable Asians of Pop Culture is a week-long research project on famous and popular Asians celebrities and "do-ers" of modern times. This is a perfect project for any 7th-12th grade class for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (May) or any time of year when you are focusing on Asian studies in your classroom.
Included is a list of 75 famous Asians for your students to choose from. This list includes current actors, musicians, and athletes such as Chloe Bennett, Jeremy Lin, and Freddie and Jimmy Wong, etc. The list also includes some longtime pop culture icons such as Bruce Lee and Vera Weng, etc. Students love combing through the list and discovering some of their favorite celebrities are on it! This list will be updated over time as new celebrities come into the picture.
This culture project was developed for my World Cultures class after I found much success with the Notable Hispanics of Pop Culture research project I originally created for my master's thesis (focused on using pop culture in the Spanish classroom) and for my students. Because this is a presentation project, the students not only learn about the one person they choose to research. They learn about the accomplishments of many famous Asians from the presentation portion of this project.
For this research project, your students will need three-four days on individual computers to research information and develop a slides project (Google Slides, Powerpoint, etc.). You will want to reserve another two days or so for presentations.
Included in this project are teacher notes, detailed student instructions, a list of 75 notable Asian celebrities, one general grading rubric (100 points), and one structured grading rubric (100 points).
