This is a fun written exercise for students to recognize note names and duration. It especially helps students that are having difficulty remembering fingerings and note lengths. And, of course, administrators love that it adds a written element to the band classroom. Students answer four questions about each note: What kind of note is it, what is the note name, how many counts it gets, and what the fingering is. I make it a scavenger note hunt, where I give an exercise and measure number and have the students find a specific count. That way, even the students who already read music are on their toes too!
