Modeling good behaviors, procedures, techniques, and strategies is probably the best way to show students your expectations. When you are modeling or doing a think-aloud, it is important that students are quietly paying attention. But, what can they do if they have a question or comment, or if they’ve made a connection?
Using this Note Taking Mat is one way for students to silently record their thoughts during a teacher model. There are several ways to use it. One way is for students to write directly on the mat. Another way is to have students use sticky notes to write (or draw) their thoughts, and then have them debrief in partners or small groups afterward, and sort their sticky notes into the four areas of the mat, before coming together as a class to share.
