This is a one page structured outline for students to use to take notes on the article, "Super Mouse," found in Workshop 7 of the Read 180 Stage C RBook. The form is set up in Cornell Note format, giving students lined space to write details from the article, form their own questions about their notes, and then write a summary of the notes. I have provided topics for each section of the notes to scaffold this higher-level thinking activity and meet the needs of students.
When I use this tool in my classroom, I first read the article aloud to students. Then, I give students the notes and we read through the article a second time, in chunks. I have students stop and give them time to highlight details in the article and then take their notes. This allows them to reread the article for better understanding and also interact with the text. The following day, students go back over their own notes and form questions that are answered by the notes they took. Finally, they write their summary of the notes. The purpose is to help students reread and review the information. An answer key is provided.
