I generally start my instruction of preterit stem-changers by having the class brainstorm what they remember about the stem-changers in the present tense. This comparison is good to reference throughout the unit. I have included here a sample of the brainstorming. You can teach this in a Venn diagram, for instance, to help students recognize similarities and differences.
