This document allows students to participate in an activity called repetitions - strands - binaries. Students read the poem, then work to identify words that repeat, words that can go in categories together, and words that are opposites.
I love doing this activity with students in the classroom! It leaves behind line-by-line poetry interpretation and allows students to do a close read of a text without even realizing that they are doing one. Students then look at their lists of words, re-read the poem with newer focus, and develop a claim about what the author is writing.
The original idea for repeititions - strands - binaries can be found in the book Writing Analytically by David Rossenwasser. I originally used it with my college freshman and now use the ideas from the book with 8th graders.
