This reading log is based on the fabulous book Notice and Note Strategies for Close Reading written by Kyleen Beers and Robert E. Probst. After students learn about the signposts, they need to practice independently. This log allows students to use their independent reading books at their own level to practice. Since each book has different signposts this log allows students to document the signposts them selves and the page number. After documenting the signposts, students are then required to write about what happened in the text. This way you can check that students are really finding signposts. The log then requires students to write the question for a signposts and their answer. The final step is where students write about their thinking and explain what the signposts and answer help them notice about the book. This step is where students real reading happens. This log can assess students understanding of signposts in addition to what they understand about their book.
