Noticias de la semana / Current Event Weekly Assignment - AP Spanish
Every other week students are required to research and present a current event from a Spanish-speaking country for the class. Each student must prepare a notecard with the Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? of the event and be ready to summarize it and compare it to another culture with which they are familiar in a two minute presentation for the class.
This helped my students tremendously when it came to the Cultural Comparison
part of the AP exam and exposed them to a wide variety of relevant issues and events in the Spanish-speaking world.
While listening to classmates' presentations the rest of the students complete their Diario de las noticias
(included in purchase), in which they summarize the event, give a brief reaction and note key vocabulary. My students' vocabulary flourished and they ended with a great record of events that took place throughout the year to review right before exam time.
This assignment is inspired by the Noticias de la semana in the AP Spanish Sample Syllabus 2
In addition to being an excellent preparation tool for presentational speaking
, this assignment cut my planning time down significantly! Every Friday that we had class the students did the planning for me by researching a current event in advance and preparing their presentations.
