This is a basic introductory activity to strengthen student ability to delineate between a noun and a verb. I do this sort after we take notes on complete sentences and fragments as a check for understanding.
This product includes
5 pages of words to sort
As a team, students cut out the words and sort them into the two categories. Once their sort is correct, they choose some of the words to write down on the graphic organizer in their interactive notebook. Students can write the definition of a noun and a verb before or after the sort on the graphic organizer.
Finally, students turn some of these pairs (or their own) into complete sentences (adding detail) in their interactive notebook and/or as an exit ticket. They provide an example of a complete sentence as well as a fragment so reinforce the difference. Students complete this section alone so they have time to think for themselves on these concepts. That way I can also use the exit ticket as data to see how individual students are learning.
