The novel assessment rubric is used after a story or novel is read in class or independently by students. It is geared towards the Common Core Standards and can be used in grades 6-8th. It can be difficult to assess students' knowledge of a novel they have read using a reading log or other type of daily or weekly tool which is why I created a novel assessment rubric. When students are able to critically think about the characters, plot development and provide textual evidence based on their responses, the teacher will then know that their students were engaged in reading. This novel assessment is an excellent way to determine if students have read a novel which means that "BALANCED LITERACY" has been effective. After students complete their novel assessment, I have students share 1 or 2 paragraphs of their choice, which they look forward to doing at the end. My students RAVE now about writing their novel assessment and I hope yours do too! Please let me know what your students thought!
