Carly Beth is a scaredy-cat. She jumps at every noise and sudden movement. The entire school knows this and gets a good laugh out of it. Two of her best friends try to scare her every day.
Carly Beth is now sick of being scared. It is Halloween and she wants to be brave and scare other people rather than other people scaring her. She buys a mask that feels funny when she puts it on but she doesnÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½t care. It is very scary.
Using the Novel Study
The novel study can be used in four ways:
Ã¢ï¿½Â¢ Independent reading at student created paced
Ã¢ï¿½Â¢ Small group independent reading at student created paced
Ã¢ï¿½Â¢ Small group reading guided by the teacher
Ã¢ï¿½Â¢ Whole class reading guided by the teacher
Each novel study starts with students being introduced to ten words that are used in the novel. The student will use the dictionary.com definitions of each word to create sentences. Many of the words have multiple definitions so the students can choose the one they are most comfortable with.
The second approach to vocabulary has two activities. Each novel study has two different activities that are not repeated in any other Goosebumps novel study. They range from grammar to word usage to prefixes and suffixes.
Short response questions:
The questions come in two forms. The first is basic comprehension directly from the story. This is your Ã¢ï¿½ï¿½Who, What, Where, When, Why and HowÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½ question.
The second form is analysis of information and events in the story. The student is required to explain an answer, respond as if they were in the story, or state what they think the character(s) should do.
The remaining sections are key components in studying literature in a detailed and meaningful way. They include illustrating, summarization, and creative writing. The directions for each part are given within each section.
