- Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George + Interactive Notebook
This unit is set up for the whole class to read as a novel study for Julie of the Wolves, by Jean Craighead George. This could also be used as a small literature circle in class as well.

It includes:
An agenda/outline for the unit
Vocabulary words with definitions for students to know BEFORE they read the assigned section
Suggested thinking for students for when they are writing post-its while reading
Activity Suggestions for after the Book Talk
Comprehension Questions for classwork or homework
Comprehension Checks to assess longer sections of the book
A Final Project sheet that includes choices for a "hands-on" project which is paired with a written assignment for students to complete at home
A rubric for the Final Project "hands-on" activity and written assignment

- My Thirteenth Winter by Samantha Abeel
My Thirteenth Winter is a memoir written by Samantha Abeel, who struggled through school and life with a math learning disability, dycalculia. It is a great read for any classroom, and allows students to be inspired by a struggle many children and adults can relate to! I used this with my 5th grade classroom, but can easily be delved into "deeper" with 6th or 7th grade.

This resource contains a Literature Circle Packet with activities that practice 4 reading strategies:
1. Noting important events and/or questions
2. Creating group discussion questions
3. Noting important or difficult language and vocabulary
4. Making connections with the text (self, text, and world)

Comprehension Questions for (about) every 2 chapters. Students read through the list of questions and choose ONE question that they will thoughtfully answer with evidence from the text.

Background information on the history of civil rights for exceptional children and a "Pros & Cons" activity to challenge the idea of labeling people "exceptional".

An activity to compare the main character of the novel with Trisha, from Thank You, Mr. Falker.

There are lots of resources here to help build a good foundation and understanding of exceptional students while learning about Samantha's personal struggle.

You can easily use all of these materials in a lot of different ways!
