The purpose of this unit is to expose students to a fictional novel that will allow them to practice independent reading skills and develop different reading strategies for before, during, and after reading. This novel study will give students an opportunity to state and defend their opinion and interpretation of a piece of written work and support their opinion with evidence from the text.
This unit is also designed to give students an opportunity to develop their writing skills where they are communicating ideas and information in a broad range of forms. Students will be given some choice in the forms they express their interpretations of the novel.
Lastly, this unit also aims to allow for students to interpret and communicate the meaning of a story that is fun and exciting, while drawing from a variety of sources, cultures, and their own experiences.
