This is a zip file containing two files:
- A PowerPoint that introduces the novel Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai by providing a brief historical context. Then it goes into an analysis of Chapter One - Pigs Can't Fly.
- A small quiz that assesses students' reading comprehension of the first chapter. Answer key is included.
Scattered throughout the PowerPoint are questions for students to consider. You could either have the class discuss them or you could assign them for homework. It's up to you! (I put down 50 minutes for lesson duration, but obviously this can change depending on your pacing and individualization of the lesson.)
Funny Boy is a lovely novel and this lesson was geared towards a grade 10 International Baccalaureate class. I tried to provide some context that would help with the understanding of this novel and lay the groundwork for future exploration. What's neat about this novel is that you can actually teach the chapters individually as novellas. (I originally read Pigs Can't Fly in university as a short story/novella, not realizing it was part of a novel.)
The quiz is very short as it's designed to be a quick snapshot of their understanding. It contains eight questions with five being multiple choice and three being super short answers. It's mainly to assess reading comprehension and I usually give it prior to the PowerPoint lesson so that students are ready for the deeper analysis.
