Half and Half is a short novel (Lexile 800) suitable for grades 3-5:
Eleven year old Fiona Cheng is confused about her heritage. She is half Chinese and half Scottish. When all of her grandparents come to visit, she finds herself torn between pleasing her Scottish grandparents and her Chinese grandmother. Fiona must decide if she will dance in the Scottish exhibit or dress as a Chinese maiden for a talk her father is giving. Fiona wants to please everyone and she worries about fitting in, so she dyes her hair – with disastrous results! Third graders will love this simple story about a girl trying to be true to herself.
