Newbery Novel Response Journal

Each response journal was created by sectioning the novel as appropriate considering the plot and length (number of chapters).

Print the pages front/back and staple.

Each journal includes the following:

* A journal cover.

* A pre-reading activity .

* Vocabulary words to define from each section of the novel.

* A written response exercise for each section of the novel. (3 sections)

* A novel completion, Newbery specific reflection. (Can be used as an assessment)

* A suggested list of various projects appropriate for the novel. (This section is

completely optional – simply leave it out of the packet)

How you can use this journal:

* This response journal is ideal for students to work on independently.

* Use this journal with literature groups in your classroom.

* Use this journal for personalized learning in your classroom.

* Use this journal as a form of differentiation.

* Give students a specific amount of time to complete each section - I often gave my students one week for each section.
