Research Migrant Workers- Research what a hobo is and listen to the song "Hobo Lullaby" by Woody Guthrie on YouTube. This is a great introduction to the hobo lifestyle that gives students an understanding of why so many men at the ranch come and go so quickly.
Students investigate setting in this chapter. There are many different animals and plants described in this chapter, which also appear at the end of the novel in Chapter 6.
Chapter 2: Students compare Candy and his dog, discussing whether an "old dog" can be useful. Also, students look at Curley's wife in her mannerisms and in her appearance. Students discuss whether she is a good wife.
Chapter 3: Students read about mercy killing as Candy's dog will be killed in this chapter. Students discuss the value of life in this section.
Chapter 4: Students visualize George and Lennie's dream and write a letter to the owners of the small plot of land in a business letter format.
Chapter 5: Students visualize Curley's wife's dream to become an actress. They also investigate the theme of loneliness on the ranch.
Chapter 6: Students revisit the setting from Chapter 1 and discuss whether it is the appropriate place for Lennie to die.
