Looking for a creative & culminating Novel Study Project? Check this out! The kids will be creating a 2-sided (6-panel) brochure for a hotel in the setting of their book. In this document, you will find a student version and a teacher version - I actually printed both for my students. The teacher version explains in detail what goes in each section; the student version has blank boxes, lines, etc. I really encouraged my kids to think of an appropriate place of lodging, given the setting of their book. For example, if their book took place in Alaska, perhaps an Ice Hotel would be a good choice. Likewise, a wooden lodge probably would NOT be appropriate if their setting was in busy Manhattan. We brainstormed all sorts of lodging: bed-and-breakfasts, casinos, posh hotels, campgrounds, mountain lodges, etc. They had such a good time with this! Once they've created their place of lodging, the brochure has them apply many aspects of the book (what main characters, or "local celebrities", might they encounter? what local events would be happening? what might they see out of their room window?) Throughout the creation of this brochure, the kids really had to think creatively about every aspect of the book & be prepared to present in small-groups.
I gave my students three days to work on this (with some in-class time and homework time) at the culmination of their Novel Study packets. You could adjust this for the age and ability of your group.
