This Novel Study / Book Club Packet covers 5 weeks of daily reading activities with the book Holes by Louis Sachar, which is a Guided Reading Level V. The first page is an assignment page for students to use and to record due dates (which you may want to handwrite before running copies for your groups). The item bullets are checkboxes so that the kids can keep track of what they've completed by checking off. Essentially, each school week would work according to this pattern:
Monday: Students are assigned to read about 10% of the book and write a paragraph summarizing the main events from those chapters.
Tuesday: Students are assigned to read the next 10% of the book, as well as find 5 vocabulary words. They must record the page number, the quote from the book using the word, and the inferred meaning.
Wednesday: students assigned to complete comprehension questions based on this week's chapters.
Thursday: Extension Activity - this is an opportunity for creatively express their comprehension of the book.
This repeats each week for 5 weeks with the same pattern; the only difference is that the Extension Activity changes each week. During one week, they work on visualization by drawing/coloring a scene from those chapters in a cool Instagram format; another week they write a conversation between two characters regarding an event from that section in a text message iPhone window format; on yet another extension assignment, they design a bedroom for a character based on the traits implied in the book in a Trading Spaces bedroom make-over. I like having the creative activities being different every week because then the kids have different skills and strategies to work on using various ways of expressing their knowledge (writing, drawing, etc.)
After the 5 weeks are complete, students independently complete a comprehension quiz on the novel.
A complete teacher key is included at the end of the document for ease of instruction - I have done all the leg work for you, including chapter summaries and hunting down all vocab words, pages, and quotes! :) This novel study is ready to go; all you have to do is obtain the books for your students.
If you're interested in a novel study rubric, visit my store - I have one specifically designed using this packet format in mind. It takes into account completion of all assignments, score on end quiz, preparedness for each book club lesson, etc.
I also recommend taking a look at my Book Club Tracking chart, which I use to keep track of each kid for each assignment - especially after 5 weeks of a novel study, it would be impossible to remember who was absent one day, who wasn't prepared another, etc.
I have many more novel study packets to upload in the coming weeks. They are SO worth it and make the novel study time very meaningful for my students.
