DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRODUCT

The guiding question of the document could be: "Do our choices affect the course of our life?".
You can choose your own guiding question, but, while teaching this unit, I was focusing on the above question because I find that it is pertinent to today`s learners.

The document includes an Introductory task, so students become familiar with the author, the main themes explored in the novel, the context of the novel and the features of Gothic literature. The Companion contains 8 Reading Journals and a final reinvestment task. The document has been tested on students and some improvements have been made. Otherwise, the teaching resource proved to be a very good study guide.

The reading journals include reading comprehension questions. Each journal has a pre-reading, while-reading and after-reading section. The journals combine reading comprehension with oral and writing activities. With the latest update, you also get a set of Speaking Task Cards set that can be used as speaking or writing prompts.

Each journal explores a specific theme and the after reading activities (oral or writing) help students to connect with the text and express their opinion on specific questions related to the novel, but, at the same time, students also have a chance to go beyond what they have read in the chapters (connect with the text).
The journals also contain questions that make students interpret and analyze quotes to develop their critical skills.
I always correct the previous reading journal with my students before reading the next one. It is a good opportunity for students to participate in class discussion, share their answers, clarify things or focus on important key elements and discuss these with learners.

The document develops the three competencies of the ESL program: oral interaction, reading comprehension and reinvestment of understanding of texts as well as writing (3 ESL competencies).

At the end of the document, there is a complex task that evaluates students' competency of reinvestment of understanding in a written production.

This teaching resource is for intermediate to upper-intermediate ESL students, however, some activities are more challenging, so the work can be used in mixed ability classrooms as well.
You can spend months on reading the novel, it depends on how much your students read during class.
