A Novel Study Unit
This is the unit I use when reading the novel, The Cricket in Times Square with my students. Normally, I read this with my 5th graders, but you could go a year lower as well. I have aligned the journal page questions, quiz questions, and final test questions to the common core. Usually, I give a chapter to read and assign the coordinating journal page to finish. The next day, they discuss in a discussion group, what they wrote on their journal pages. You can use these chapter journal pages as a discussion group or as a simple homework grade. Most of the time I used them as group discussions (Socratic seminars too), but occasionally I took a homework grade. When the novel was finished, they turned in all their journal pages in the manila envelope that you will see in this packet.
Items in the packet:
* Chapter predictions
*Journal pages 1-15
*Four quizzes that chunk chapters (complete with labeled standards and points)
*Three vocabulary quizzes
*Two final tests, you can choose which one you’d like to use (complete with labeled standards and points)
*Extra credit opportunity
*Journal instructions with pictures
*Journal questions that get attached to envelope
*Rubric for journal
Again, use this to its fullest benefit. Have it work for you and your students. I hope you enjoy this packet!
