HomEd is a reading based program that uses novel studies to develop language skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. The approach of the novel study program is to provide challenging activities to develop language skills while using quality literature that students love to read.
Novel studies are a flexible learning resource that can be tailored to fit the schedule and needs of classrooms, reading groups, or individual students. They are designed to pace students through the novels that they are reading. Novel studies can be used for either independent study or for small groups. With the use of the answer keys, students can work completely alone or in small groups with little teacher supervision. However, students can also benefit by using novel studies in full class sized groups, with parents or tutors.
The beginner level novel studies (levels 1 and 2) focus mostly on the lower levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The question and vocabulary activities deal mostly with the levels of knowledge and comprehension. The literature circle and story writing activities get into the higher levels of application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
