When asked to dive deep into a book, some students struggle to identify and organize the basic literary structure of their novel. If they cannot successfully complete this step – asking them to do increasingly complex analysis can overwhelm them.
This handout is designed to help students focus and actively read. It is a good resource that allows students to demonstrate their understanding of the basic elements of their novel; it also provides teachers with an easy way to monitor students’ comprehension!
Here are some ways we’ve used the Thinkmark Outline in our own classroom:
1. a reading check or assessment (formative or summative)
2. a planning guide to prepare for a Booktalk, essay, or other type of novel–based project
3. a study guide for an end of novel cumulative test
4. a discussion preparation tool
