Update: I have removed the PDF quizzes and added a MS Word document so teachers can edit the quizzes to meet their specific needs.
I have developed a five week unit that blends the book with a variety of nonfiction media for students to analyze. This novel unit focuses around the award winning novel “All American Boys” by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. The book takes head on the issue of police brutality, prejudice, bias, and racial tensions in compelling story told in tandem by Rashad, a victim of police brutality, and Quinn, a witness to that brutality. There is a five question quiz for each chapter. The quizzes are for comprehension and intended to see if a student has read the material and is prepared for class discussion.
Most chapters are paired with nonfiction to reiterate that even though the novel is fiction, it is inspired by actual events. Nonfiction readings / videos examine disparities in the treatment between African Americans (Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, John Crawford, Michael Brown, etc.) and white Americans (Ethan Couch, Bryce Masters), racial color blindness, and privilege.
Artifacts include news articles from CNN, People Magazine, Huffington Post, LA Times, NY Post, and more, commentary and analysis from popular YouTube personalities such as Kat Blaque and Lacy Green, slam poems by Javon Johnson and Joseph Capehart, an essay regarding privilege, and a videos regarding how the media covers issues in the media. Students are asked to respond in writing to each of the nonfiction articles.
As you can see in the Unit Outline / Map, I have this collected in a Schoology class. I have here everything as PDFs - Schoology is not needed. However, if you’d like, I can share with you the class on schoology as well, free of charge!
