Walker has out done herself with this stunning novel. In this book, we are able to see the life of a slave that we normally do not see, a child born from Slave and Slave Master. This creates wonderful themes and a very real look at the lives of the people during this time. The other interesting part is that it takes the reader on a journey not only through the civil war, but through the emancipation and how it did and did not help the slaves.
This book is a summer or school year required read for many seniors in high school. I believe that this notebook will give your students just enough guidance to develop and participate in lively conversation about slavery. This is NOT busy work. The students will notice that each page is not based off of a different chapter, instead it is based off of themes and ideas. Once the students have read enough to have a good bases for discussion, the question is posed. To establish a strong answer for these questions, the students will have to combine thoughts from many different chapters. Discussing these questions ahead of time will also help to guide the students in their reading.
