Product Description
"On my tombstone it will say, 'I tried everything. Nothing was easy'." Rita Rudner (American comedienne ~ 1953)

For November 1st, Día de Todos los Santos, students craft a tombstone out of a cereal box.

Students choose a famous Spanish-speaking person or Hispanic-American who is no longer living, research facts about that person, and then create a tombstone.

On November 1st you just set up 'the cemetery' of tombstones so students can walk through it, read each tombstone, and answer questions about the famous people buried there.

After that, students make a short oral presentation about their person while students fill in a category chart.

After the class activity on November 1st, this also makes a wonderful display in the school library.

Included here are:

1. Detailed project instructions in English
2. A grading rubric
3. A research notes form
4. A list of almost 70 names of famous people to choose from

5. A categorization chart for class presentations
6. A sample follow-up test on the people
7. Photos of some outstanding student samples

8. A 11-page overhead about burial customs in Spanish-speaking countries and some photos of the tombstones of some famous Hispanics.

We do the research part at least two weeks before the due date of the tombstones so students have ample time to do a nice job.

An Alternate Version is included, if time is short, whereby students take the information on their person and put it on a tombstone template on paper.

This is also another activity to do around 'Dia de los Muertos'.

Everything here is ready-to-use so you can set this project in motion with ease. You'll be surprised at how creative your students can be. (35 pages)

Another teacher, Karen Hummer of Ohio, has added a brilliant twist to this basic activity and buys black plastic tablecloths at a dollar store to put on the desks, puts black lights on the whiteboard ledges, places battery-operated tea lights around the tombstones, has the overhead on with a blue screen and the classroom lights off, and plays some spooky music such as 'Liszt's Danza macabra' or 'Marschner's El Vampiro' as students circulate to read the tombstones ... added touches that make for a memorable classroom experience for students.

Here are yet a few more music options:

'The 13 Scariest Pieces of Classical Music for Halloween'.

I have created my products as Word documents because that is how I use them. They are unlocked so teachers can change vocabulary words or modify things if they wish.

If you prefer a different format for the overhead, below are some suggestions.

To Make A Slide Show In ActivInspire
If you use ActivInspire, you can save the Word document as a pdf (this is easily done with the newer versions of Word), then you can simply import the pdf to ActivInspire and have a document for that format.

To Make A Slide Show In PowerPoint
If you prefer to use the PowerPoint format, you can easily convert a Word document to a PowerPoint.

This link explains it clearly: 'Creating A PowerPoint From A Word Document.'
