TWO World News crosswords.
What happened around the world last week? A Swiss farmer found precious Roan coins buried in his garden. A Canadian mining company found the biggest diamond. England found a new rugby coach. And in Sarajevo, they hid a time capsule to commemorate the end of the Balkan war. An Australian boy sang the National Anthem at a baseball game while he had the hiccups. And an Australian beach was closed to swimmers because of a large shark.
The puzzles can be used as an individual or small-group activity by middle and high school students. I think they work best when 2-4 students work together, competing against other groups (because kids can't help being competitive). Apple and Samsung are spending bazillions of dollars convincing the kids to use smartphones and so I suggest teachers embrace that, and let the students use their phones to explore last week's news events.
Let the kids chat about the clues and what they think about the news stories. Copy some of the puzzles and have them in your bag for when you have to substitute for a sick colleague.
Come back next Sunday evening for next week's World News Crosswords.
