Getting students at a novice Spanish level to speak in Spanish can be very difficult because they are so afraid! Get your students talking with these conversation cards (30). These cards have common questions that students should learn in Spanish 1 or in Junior High Spanish, such as
"¿Cómo estás tú?"
"¿Cómo está usted?"
"¿De qué color es?"
For every personal question, there is a question addressing someone as "tú," and the same question addressing someone as "usted." There are also some non-personal questions, such as "¿Qué día es hoy?"
When the student who has the card asks his/her partner the question, the "responder" has the opportunity to answer. If he/she forgets the way to answer the question, the student with the card has some possible answers to not only give the "responder" hints, but also check his/her answers.
This works perfectly for bell work at the beginning of class, as an "conversation" choice during stations, as an activity to do 3 days a week (gradually increasing in time), or even as an activity to complete after having finished assigned work in class.
This is a low-pressure way for students to get talking in the Spanish language, familiarize them with common questions and answers, and help them to have fun!
You could even throw in a twist and get them to make their own questions based on what they've learned so far!
