Change up your class format!

These are my plans for a multi-day project leading up to a 3-way debate on whether or not we should turn more towards nuclear power for electricity as the effects of climate change become more pronounced. I developed these plans for a sophomore Chemistry 1 class at the end of a unit on the internal structure of the atom, but not much background is assumed. Students do background research to learn more about nuclear power, and then formulate debate arguments that are either pro or con nuclear power. The debates are then held in pods of three, where one student argues for, one against, and one acts as a judge. This format is very manageable, and requires all students to be engaged in the debate process. I have use the 3-way debate format in several different types of classes, and find that students in Science courses really welcome the change in format!
