At first glance the Nullification Crisis does not seem terribly noteworthy. A state was unhappy with a federal law, ignored it, and then the federal government asserted control over the situation. But a quick summary of the event misses how perilous the time was. In many ways, this was the first serious disunion threat that the United States faced, and the legacy of the event can be seen as foreshadowing for the later U.S. Civil War.
Andrew Jackson is typically credited for successfully managing the crisis, but this DBQ will ask students to form their own opinions on the matter. Students will read 8 primary sources and 1 secondary source detailing the event, and answer 5 questions to demonstrate understanding of how the sources relate to each other. Once a review of the packet has occurred in class, students will cite 3 sources in an open response question answering the DBQ's essential question: "How serious was the Nullification Crisis and did President Jackson manage it well?"
Total time needed is 2-3 classes.
