Number Play Mats (1-10) are great for counting, one-to-one correspondence and handwriting practice. These holiday-themed play mats will inspire your students to count their way through the holiday season.
Depending on your needs, you will print the colored pages and laminate or you will print the black and white and let your student color the pages.
The boxes are the size of white jumbo Cuisenaire rods. Young children can be encouraged to count and place the white rods into the boxes for each number mat. Students can also use the boxes to place other small items like buttons or rocks for counting.
Depending on your preference, you may use the other jumbo rods. Though, generally, it is discouraged to assign a number value to other rods. One to one correspondence is fine for white rods though. You can also count the other rods like, “two red rods, three red rods, four orange rods, etc.”
The reason assigning number values to rods is discouraged is because Gattegno saw the best use of the rods for observing structures first. When number values are assigned to the rods, it is easy for both teacher and student to be distracted by number facts. If structures come first, young children find it easier to consolidate facts into families leading to easier memorization.
