Presentations for numbers 1 - 19 in files ten number at a time: 1 - 10, 2-11, 3-12 etc. The idea is that learners will get a feel for how much the number is worth by seeing it and saying how they know how much it is. Could be used as a 'flash and hide' how much activity or a 'flash and hide and how do you know' activity. Learners I have worked with have a far better understanding of number value and sequencing after using this. Also highlighted is 10 and 1 place value.
At present, I have learners reinforcing the value by pointing as they say how much it is and clapping as they say how much it is: 15 is 15 finger points and 15 claps. We extend this to clap for odd, pat knees for even and stamp for 10.
