Working with number bonds helps students to see the relationship between addition and subtraction. In Level 1, students will create all combinations of numbers 5 – 10. This level expects students to complete all combinations for each number, but the blank number bonds are a clue for how many combinations are possible. You might want to show your students the trick of counting from 0 to the featured number while looking at the parts they have used. All numbers should be represented if they’ve found ALL combinations. For example: In the combinations of five, the “parts” should show the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. You may wish to have counters available for students to use… or allow students to draw pictures above each number bond to help them find the combinations.
