Large Sums Addition and Subtraction
This is my alternative to traditional timed fact practice that also helps build conceptual knowledge of composition and decomposition of numbers, unlike many other fact practices.
I was having great success getting my 4th grade students developing their understanding of numbers and how they can be broken down into their components by using number bonds. Unfortunately, this skill was not transferring when we went to solve larger computation problems. The facts just weren't fluid enough. Instead they were reverting back to counting their fingers. To help them develop fluency with their facts, while maintaining strong number sense, I created this set of number bond fact practice.
Students are timed for one minute (this time may need to be adjusted for your students), much like traditional fact timing programs, but are still required to think about numbers as components of each other. Using this method, students never see arithmetic as memorized facts but instead as sets of interconnected quantities.
This file includes sets lettered “R” through “MM” and includes facts adding up to 10 (Set “R”) through adding up to 20 (Set “MM”). Sets alternate between single sums (for example: all sums of 10 or all sums of 17) and compilations of previous sets (for example: sums from 1-12 or sums from 1-19). These sets would be best for students who have already mastered their smaller facts (Also available soon in number bond form in my store on TeacherPayTeachers). Each set has a practice version and a timing version, designed to be copied front to back. I have students work with partners to practice the facts in each set first before we turn the paper over to do the timing. Each set is also designed to be cut in half; identical on the top and bottom halves. I've also included a blank set if you wish to make your own set of facts for your students.
