This police themed addition and subtraction resource focuses on using number bonds to build mental strategies to add and subtract multiples of 10 and 100 to/from a 3-digit number. This strategy may be introduced with a number bond foldable found on page 5. Another way to introduce the strategy may be to use the number bond mats included on pages 9-10. These mats may be displayed on an interactive whiteboard or laminated so that students may write on them with dry erase markers. Checkout the preview to view the mats and a few other items from this resource.
Once students understand the concept, they may practice completing number bond as they play Jail Bird. Jail Bird is a card game that requires players to find pairs of matching number bonds. The catch is each bond has the same number, but is split up differently. The Jail Bird game cards are available in both color and black & white.
There are two math centers available for students: Number Lock-Up is a math center in which students match a 3 part expression to a jail cell containing a 3-digit number. Ping Pong Patrol is a math center in which students drop a ping pong ball onto a muffin pan, and then draw a number card. Next, they add or subtract the amount from inside the hole with the number on the card.
There are 3 printables included that may be used an assessment or an addition math center. On two of the printables, students cut cards and paste them on a chart under the appropriate column.
