The Number Family Tree Kit is an interactive teaching tool that will help your students learn to recognize numbers by tens. This activity helps students review place value as well! It is fun and hands on and will allow you to create groups, play games or work one on one with your students.
Directions: I laminate all of the pieces before cutting them out. I also attach Velcro to the branches and the numbers so that they can stay on during the lesson at the blackboard. BUT you do not have to attach Velcro in order to use it. Once I laminate the set, I cut out all of the number signs and the round numbers so that they can be placed on the tree while counting. I do not cut the tree out. Again it is up to you as to whether or not you want to cut the tree out. When we review numbers, we call them families. For example, the “20’s” family is all of the two digit numbers with a “2” as the first digit. I then have my students find the two digit numbers with the “2” in front and attach them to the tree. Then we count together from 20- 29. And we label that family the 20’s family. This kind of activity also lends itself to talking about place value. You
can do the same type of activity when talking about counting by groups and identifying even and odd numbers. Spanish versions to come soon!!!
Above all, have a great time! Kids love success and repetition so this is a great way to build their confidence and create fun new ways to count!
Use your imagination! The possibilities with this activity are endless!!
