Number line addition can be tricky for second graders, but it is an important strategy that aligns with the common core. This packet will help 2nd grade teachers to teach adding two-digit numbers on the number line. I've included 3 differentiated pages each for two different number line addition lessons. The first set requires students to use the empty number line strategy to add decade numbers (multiples of ten). Each successive page includes less instructional support. The pages may be used as part of scaffolded lessons or as differentiated seatwork or homework. The second set of pages requires students to add any two 2-digit numbers (using the counting on by tens and ones strategy). I've also included a center activity for additional practice using the number line addition strategy. The Roll and Hop Center Activity includes a student direction page, an empty number lines workmat, and a student recording sheet.
These number line addition lessons/activities are aligned with the following common core objectives:
2.NBT5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
2.NBT7 Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.
