I created this PowerPoint to teach my kindergartners how to use a number line to solve addition problems. The first slide explains to students how to use a number line. Slides 2-14 contain addition problems and then a star comes onto the number line and shows how to solve the problem. The answer comes in at the end. The PowerPoint contains animation, so that you have time to discuss how to solve the problem before the answer flies onto the screen. Slides 15-20 contain word problems. Students will learn how to solve a word problem using a number line. You can edit the slides on the Powerpoint. You can change the names of the students in the word problems, to match the names of students in your own classroom. You can also change the addition problems, if you would like to. Below are the common core math standards addressed by this Powerpoint.
Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
