Are your students having trouble with number lines, or number patterns? Last year "number patterns," was the most difficult skill in our first math unit. Even after practicing counting backwards and forwards, as well as the concept of one more and one less, to transfer this skill to the new context of a number line with more than one blank was a big leap. Our math series just did not provide enough using number lines in this way, so I had to find or make something new. I knew that manipulatives would be better than worksheets that had to be erased. Markers would be more fun, but then I had this vision of a self correcting activity. This year they were a huge hit!
With these number line "task cards," most kids could see right away when their first try did not work. The fixed number in the pattern forces them to reorganize their cards until the pattern makes sense. Simply partner your students with more number sense with those still learning, and many will naturally show them how to switch the numbers around with very little redirection from you.
