Collaborative activities can be done with young students when materials have been carefully prepared and students understand what is expected of them. This is a highly engaging activity that allows students to work together to solve number puzzles by linking different representations of a number together. The teacher serves as the facilitator and "kid watches" to see how students work together and build theirunderstandings together.. Students move around the room in a structured manner and get to solve a variety of puzzles and learn to help each other build their understandings.
In addition, I have provided a cut and paste strip book that can be used for assessment purposes or additional practice.
This packet is flexible and I offer a variety of ways it can be used in a classroom. You can use it as part of your guided math program, make it an independent center once students understand the task, or with a partner.
My students love working collaboratively, learning together.
