Product Description

These no prep mats are a valuable tool in the classroom – they are engaging, hands on and challenge children to think about how to represent numbers. Students represent numbers in different ways such as tally marks, tens frames, numerals, blocks and pictures. The activity can be differentiated according to the needs of individual children by choosing a number range for each child to focus on. They are perfect for maths centers, or can be used as a whole class activity.

Students are able to practice:

  • Writing the number
  • Tallying the number
  • Representing the number on a tens frame (to 20 and to 100)
  • Making groups with counters or blocks
  • Drawing the number (for example, drawing 5 suns to represent 5)
  • Identifying numbers that come before and after
  • Identifying numbers that are ten more/less
  • Number bonds

The pack includes:

  • 4 x number mats - write the number, tally the number, tens frames to 20 and make the number (using counters/blocks).
  • 4 x number mats – write the number, draw the number, tens frames to 20 and • before/after numbers.
  • 4 x number mats – write the number, represent the number using tens and ones blocks, ten more & ten less than, and number bonds.
  • 4 x number mats – write the number, tens frames to 100, number bonds & ten more/ten/less.
  • Number cards from 0 – 20.
  • Assessment / record sheet

I recommend you print out the required number and laminate them for ongoing use.

You may need:

  • Number mat
  • Counters/blocks
  • 4–5 number cards (choose the appropriate level for each student)
  • Ones and tens blocks
  • Dry erase marker and eraser

How To Use This Product:

Students place a number card in the middle of the board and represent the number in four ways. When they have completed the task, they choose another number or a different number mat. It is a great tool for assessing where students are at.
