2.NBT.5: Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Use with The Common Core Classroom Guide to 2.NBT.5!!!
** I use this game/activity in my small groups while I teach the
“Teacher Group” during my Daily 5 Math. **
This is an independent activity that requires students to choose a number on the 100 chart and develop a set of directions to get to their secret number. Students use their understanding of adding 10, subtracting 10, adding 1, and subtracting 1, etc. to write directions to navigate a hundred chart and land on their secret number. When students create 2 different number paths to the same number, they give their directions to a partner and see if their partner can follow the directions and end at the secret number.
This activity supports 2.NBT.5. It allows students to practice adding and subtracting 10 and 1 to/from any number. This will help students develop the number sense they need to apply to other addition and subtraction strategies to solve other/future math problems.
