A fun way to practice decoding number patterns!
Every student is assigned a Math Detective – Solve the Code sheet. (This sheet may be laminated for extended use.)
Teacher writes 4 secret codes on the chalkboard/whiteboard before activity begins.
Students record the code into the boxes as they solve the pattern.
** Note: I use this activity as a way to get my students settled and focused in the morning. It can also be used as a transition activity into math class, as a “brain break” or as a “bonus” activity for students who finish their work quickly.
** Secret codes are easy to make up. I use a repeating pattern of 3 or 4 numbers no longer than 12 characters. Then I chose which numbers to leave blank in the codes. As the students get better at solving the codes, you can increase the difficulty of the codes you create for them.
For example: 1_312_123_23 = 123123123123
